Symptoms of Depression

Depression can be redefined as a mental state characterized by a pessimistic sense of inadequacy and a hopeless lack of activity. In fact it is a common mental disorder that presents with depressed mood, feelings of low self-worth or guilt, loss of interest of pleasure, disturbed sleep and much more. The symptoms of depression vary from person to person. In most of the cases the symptoms of depressions are just a blue mood. Some people also describe the symptoms of depression as ‘living in a black hole’ or having a feeling of impending doom. The various symptoms of depression has been summarised as follows:

  • Inability to experience pleasure in anything the victim does. Nothing seems to develop an interest in him which he earlier used to enjoy. Even his former habits, social activities and sexual life fail to add a zing in his life.
  • The feeling of hopelessness, depression, gloom, discouragement and emptiness are also marked as symptoms of depression.
  • Significant weight loss or abnormal gain of weight is another symptom of depression which seems to have an adverse effect on one’s life.
  • Insomnia or over-sleeping is also a true symptom of depression and the victim easily gets addicted to this bad habit.Symptoms of Depression
  • Another vital symptom of depression remains to be keyed up, growing or feeling anxious, unable to sit still for a stretch of time, restlessness or sluggishness, lack of response or reaction, slow and elongated speech and unusual body movements.
  • Feeling physically drained and suffering from fatigue. Can’t perform at the usual pace and after the completion of small things also makes the victim feel exhausted.
  • Strong feelings of worthlessness or guilt. Harsh criticisms of perceived faults and mistakes are also considered to be a symptom of depression.
  • The inability to concentrate on a certain task or idea and also facing difficulty in making decisions. Unable to think straight and also memory problems.
  • Irritability is another important symptom. The victim seems to get easily annoyed and frustrated by small things.

The symptoms of depression can also be seen in various physical stresses like headaches, diarrhoea, constipation, aching joints and abdominal pain.
