Relation between Stress and Depression

Stress and depressed are regarded universally as a universally phenomenon. It is often noticed that when one is stressed one tends to become more depressed. Much psychological researches has been carried out which emphasizes on the fact that there is an integral relation between stress and depression. But the relation between stress and depression is however not a simple one. Experiencing the symptoms of depressions is not necessarily experiencing the clinical depression itself. In fact the symptoms of depression are only considered as clinical depression when they last for a long time and are severe enough so much so that they interfere with one’s capability to function in some important area of one’s life. Depression as an illness seems to have a life of its own. It is usually because of a stressful situation and condition that an individual feels depressed but then it also continues in an independent mode of the stressful situation.
It is a true fact that stress contributes to the symptoms of depression, for example sadness. It has been proved by the recent researchers that symptoms of depression have been increased at a rapid rate by the stressors. The stressors ha
ve been found in many cases to contribute to depression symptoms and include terrorist attacks, lose of parents or spouse, losing a child or other family member, conflicts arising from family issues, having a family member diagnosed by serious injury or illness, violence or mental torture within the family, issues related to marital conflict, divorce issues, changes in one’s household, stresses relating to substance abuse, matters related to financial stress, stresses regarding health matters, loss of job, various issues regarding office and occupation and last but not the least exams.
It is not only that stress contributes to depression. Sometimes it can be seen that even depression contributes to stress. Various scientific researches are also coming to conclusions as to how stress affects the body causing depression. There are also several psychological factors which influence the stress and depression relationship, mainly the resources available during the experience of stress. To sum up the relation between stress and depression we can suggest to make full use of personal resources, avoid negative thinking, cope up active all the odds.
