Meaning of Depression

Depression is a broader term than just feeling sad. People who are just moody or feeling “blue” for a few days are not medically depressed. Actually medically depressed people face such feeling for prolonged time like very down—or in a few cases, very anxious or extremely exhausted—for quite a few weeks or even months. Alcohol and/or drug abuse may also be symbols of depression. Depression can negatively affects all aspects of a person’s life, from school, to work, to family and social life because depression can change the manner a person thinks, feels, and behaves.

Causes of Depression

Besides external, societal factors that may cause depression, there may be other factors which make a person depressed. These include harrowing life experiences for instance death of a near and dear, prolonged disease, taking drugs with negative side effects, hormonal transformation, or hereditary depression. Sometimes the source of depression is unidentified.

In truth, whatsoever the situation is, the root cause of depression is an imbalance of certain chemicals in the brain. Generally, the function of these “chemical messengers” is to help nerve cells in communicating with each other by transferring and getting messages, and they also influence the mood of a person. At the time of depression, the communication between nerve cells becomes ineffective which is caused due to the lack of supply of chemical messengers.

Symptoms of Depression

There are numerous possible symptoms of depression. A person diagnosed with depression, may have several combination of these symptoms at once, including disheartened mood, or loss of pleasure or interest in activities. Having same symptoms is not mandatory for all depressed patients; study shows that people experience the symptoms of depression in several ways. While one person may suffer with body aches and pains, another person may notice sudden changes in their weight or appetite. It is important to identify the symptoms of depression, so the disease can be treated properly.

Symptoms and Signs of depression include:

  • Depressed or short-tempered behavior - almost everyday
  • Interest or pleasure lost in activities like hobbies, work, sex, or being with friends most of the day
  • Hasty fluctuations in weight or appetite
  • Over sleeping or sleeplessness
  • Anxiety or impatience
  • Constant exhaustion or loss of energy
  • Frequent thoughts of triviality or guilt
  • Difficulty in concentrating and decisions making
  • Regular suicidal thoughts

Treatments of depression

Psychotherapy also called as talk therapy is one of a valuable instrument in treating Depression. It might benefit in overcoming various disorders of sleeping, eating or feelings such as rejection, antagonism, triviality, and desperation. HoweverDepression!  Depression!  Depression! Psychotherapy is not an everyday treatment, still it can help you in daily treatments.

At times Antidepressants are also used along with Psychotherapy. Antidepressants are effective but there can be some very serious side effects also. In children below 21 years there may be suicidal feelings. Some antidepressants intermingle negatively with food and as a result bound you to have a rigid diet. The prescription may be one or more doses every day.

Many people opt for herbal Supplements as they are not having any side effects or very few side effects if they have any at all. They are a combination of herbs and some other nutritive stuff that provide relief from depressive symptoms. The best supplements are those which have been tested rigorously as per pharmaceutical standards. The metabolism of components at the molecular should be considered. The study of the communications between the components must be examined. This make sure their purity, safety, effectiveness and potency.
