Dealing With Depression

Published by editor | Filed under Depression

Dealing with DepressionDepression a common term for a sad or low mood or the loss of pleasure; an emotion that does not affect capacity to perform personal and vocational obligations.

 A General Understanding:

Dealing with depression starts by understanding its patterns and symptoms. Depression is described as an abnormal emotional state characterized by feelings of sadness, despair, and discouragement. Classic signs and symptoms of depression include:

  • Loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Changes in appetite patterns
  • A deeply sad or depressed mood
  • Difficulties concentrating
  • Changes in activity level
  • Guilty feelings or feelings of worthlessness
  • Energy loss
  • Thoughts of suicide

The existence of multiple symptoms for greater than two weeks could merit attention.

Dealing With Depression : Dealing with depression was not on my mind because I was in denial. Even though I experienced feelings of worthlessness and felt unsuccessful, I didn’t equate it with depression. I also cried very frequently. I have always been very emotional and capable of crying during a touching commercial, so I was not overly concerned with my symptoms. Then I started having thoughts about suicide and could no longer deny the depression.

I came to realize that depression seems to have a stigma attached. Others were quick to judge me. Why? I did not know. Even the Bible discusses depression. Elijah, the great miracle worker was depressed. King David, a man after God’s own heart fell into a depressed state. Job, one of the most righteous men of his time, was depressed to the point of suicide. The Bible recognizes despair and discouragement, so why do those of us who suffer from depression deny it and try so hard to hide it from everyone?

Dealing With Depression - Receiving Medical Help

I finally started dealing with depression by seeking medical help. My doctors called my condition Situational Depression. They explained that the situations in my life happened so quickly that I lost my ability to cope with them in a reasonable manner and became severely discouraged.

In my case, I started with one medication, but after several weeks, the dosage of that medication was increased and another medication was added.

Dealing With Depression - The Reality

The reality is that this is a serious problem and in a few cases, dealing with depression requires treatment. Do not ignore the classic symptoms. It is a problem that can be treated and there are many options. Even if you don’t have the classic symptoms, but have lasting feelings of sadness, discouragement, or worthlessness for several consecutive days, see your doctor for help.
